34th Annual Columbus Dinner
West Orange, New Jersey
The Italian Tribune will host the 34th Annual Columbus
Dinner on
Friday, October 8th at 7 p.m. at Mayfair Farms in West Orange, New
Jersey. Each year the dinner celebrates and pays tribute to Italians and Italian
Americans who, in the spirit of Christopher Columbus, have made major contributions
to the Italian American community and have pledged to promote and preserve Italian
heritage.
The gala event begins with a cocktail reception, followed by a formal dinner and an awards ceremony. This years recipients include baseball great, Joe Pepitone, and boxing champion, Arturo Gatti. Black tie is optional. Mayfair Farms is located at 481 Eagle Rock Avenue in West Orange. Tickets are priced at $150 per person. For reservations or more information, call 973-485-6000.

13th Annual Ocean County Columbus Day Parade Committee
Boulevard in Seaside Heights, NJ
On Sunday, October 10, 2004, the Ocean County Columbus Day Committee
will hold its 13th Annual Columbus Day Parade. The parade,
which will take place on the Boulevard in Seaside Heights, will be the
centerpiece of a three-piece Italian Festival that will take place on
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 8th, 9th and
10th.

New Jersey Congress of Italian American Organizations
New Brunswick, NJ (Rutgers University)
On Saturday, October 23, 2004, the New Jersey Italian and Italian
American Heritage Commission will host the 1st New Jersey
Congress of Italian and Italian American Organizations at Rutgers University.
This Congress, which has been named the "Unification of the Efforts
of New Jersey Italian American Organizations", is a conference that
will bring together many of the 400 Italian American organizations in
New Jersey to discuss, coordinate and exchange ideas regarding the promotion
of the Italian culture. The conference is a statewide opportunity to
network with other organizations and to "get the word out" regarding
the programs and events of Italian American organizations through New
Jersey
The Congress participants will be able to take part in panels and break-out discussions that will include the promotion of Italian Americans, the support of Italian language and heritage programs and the enhancement of commercial and cultural exchanges with Italy.
The event will begin at 8 a.m. in the Rutgers University Student Center and will conclude at approximately 3 p.m. Admission to this event is also free and all participants will be treated to a continental breakfast and lunch.

Italian Heritage Month Concert
Upper Montclair, NJ (Montclair State University)
The Coccia Institute of Montclair State University will host its
First Annual Heritage and Culture Concert at 7 p.m. on October 23, 2004
in the new Alexander Kassar Theater. The event will feature renowned
concert singer Danny Tarantino who will perform a variety of Italian
American favorites including pop, jazz and Sinatra classics. In addition,
the concert will consist of a short presentation ceremony.

Italian Heritage Night
60 Byrd Avenue - Bloomfield, NJ (Garden State Concert Band)
The Garden State Concert Band will present an Italian Heritage Night
on Saturday, October 23, 2004 at 7 p.m. The reception, which will take
place in Herron Hall at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, will feature music
of Italian composers and Italian folk songs. The ticket price is $27.50
and includes a buffet dinner.

The Age of Galileo Art and Science in Early Modern Italy
New Brunswick, New Jersey (Rutgers University)
This symposium brings together leading scholars in the fields of
art history, comparative literature, and the history and philosophy of
science to explore the wide-ranging influence of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)
on both the arts and science of his day. The morning session is devoted
primarily to Galileo's considerable scientific contributions. The afternoon
session focuses on Galileo's relation to, and impact on, European art
and culture.
This one-day symposium marks the culmination of a broad celebration of
the life and works of Galileo to be held at Rutgers University during
the week
of October 25-October 31, 2004. Other scheduled events include the Mason Gross
Lecture on October 27, "Galileo, Artist and Scientist," by Dava Sobel,
author of Galileo's Daughter, 1999, and Longitude, 1995, 5:30 PM, Trayes Hall,
Douglass Campus; a screening of Joseph Losey's acclaimed 1975 film "Bertolt
Brecht's Galileo," on October 27, 10 am, Alexander Library, College Avenue
Campus; "Reading the Cosmos: Printed Books in the Age of Galileo," an
exhibition of rare, illustrated scientific texts from the seventeenth century
from Rutgers Special Collections at the Alexander Library, College Avenue Campus;
and a concert, "Opera in the Time of Galileo," Nicholas Music Center,
Mason Gross Performing Arts Center, October 31, 2 pm.
