Coccia Institute’s Annual Student Symposium
Montclair, NJ
This half-day symposium will cultivate a space in which students learn through a morning session of interactive workshops and discussion followed by an academic competition. College students also will participate at the symposium as mentors and guides for their younger colleagues. In addition, the symposium will provide instruction and assessment in cultural understanding as well as in language proficiency and Italian American history. We will conclude the symposium with a presentation entitled “The Secret History of Italian American Evacuation and Interment During World War II” by a special guest speaker, Mr. Anthony Martignetti. For more information please contact Gina Miele at 973-655-4050 or email coccia.institute@montclair.edu.

The New Jersey Guitar & Mandolin Society April meeting
6:00 pm -7:30 pm
Hackensack, NJ07601
Free for members- $8.00 for all other attendees.
At this meeting, guest artist John La Barbera will present a lecture/recital about the Chitarra Battente. It is the first 5 course metal string guitar, is an original Italian instrument and ancestor of the first steel string guitar. Created in the 16th Century, it was played as a strumming guitar to accompany song and dance. Its distinct percussive and tonal quality can be heard in the tarantellas and laments of Puglia and Calabria, where it has survived for over 500 years and is still in great demand today. John La Barbera will demonstrate the sounds and songs from the regions where it is popular and present ways to adapt its technique to a regular acoustic guitar. The "battente" technique combines original 16th century "rasqueado" strumming patterns, which coincide with the frame drum to give the correct accents.
