The Italian American Museum and the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute
New York, New York

The Italian American Museum and the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute/Queens College, The City University of New York, will present a new exhibition, Dennis, Rose and Sal: Family Portraits, a collection of photographs by John Milisenda, from January 10 through February 8, 2005. The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, January 19 at 6 p.m. The artist, whose work has been shown in over 125 exhibitions, will give a talk at the Museum on Wednesday, January 26 at 6p.m.

This will be the Italian American Museum’s second exhibition showcasing the work of a contemporary Italian American artist — a continued exploration of the relationships between Italian American art and artists and American culture.

"Dennis, Rose, and Sal: Family Portraits" is the culmination of more than 35 years of work by the photographer, whose primary subjects are his mother, Rose; father, Sal; and brother, Dennis.

Milisenda’s photographs illuminate the universality of complex familial interactions while depicting the love and special struggles that his family experienced due to Dennis’ developmental disability.

The exhibit focuses on the remarkable relationship between Dennis and Rose. Milisenda’s images show how Dennis mimics his mother’s gestures and stance. For example, in a photo taken after the death of Sal, Dennis walks a few feet behind Rose in an empty parking lot, assuming her slouching stoop of old age; mother and son appear as one in the stark landscape that highlights Sal’s tangible absence and their inextricable bond (the two were not separated until Dennis moved into a residence at age 54).

Milisenda’s photographs celebrate the significance of the lives captured within their frames. Describing Dennis as one who "hates to talk about himself," Milisenda celebrates his brother, his parents, and their lives together, giving them a singular voice and history.

The Italian American Museum is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, and by appointment. The Italian American Museum is in transitional residence at the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute/Queens College, The City University of New York. It is located at 28 West 44th Street, 17th floor, New York, NY 10036.
