Board of Academic Advisors
Rationale
The Board of Academic Advisors (BAA) was established to ensure the academic integrity and standards of the Institute. The BAA assists the Institute in the following areas:
(1) Publication programs. The BAA or its subcommittees may wish to recommend the sponsorship (by the Commission or the Institute) of reprints of older books or the commissioning of new books, particularly in the areas of Italian or Italian American history and culture.
(2) Lecture series, symposia, etc. The BAA or its subcommittees may wish to assist the Institute in sponsoring lecture series, symposia or round-table discussions that would advance Italian and Italian American Studies.
(3) Co-sponsorships and collaborations. The BAA or its subcommittees may wish to assist the Institute in developing collaborative efforts of an academic nature with other Italian and Italian-American programs in New Jersey, in other states and in Italy.
Description
The BAA will consist of a chair and 14 regular members, for a total of 15 Board members. The 15 members would include the 6 academic appointees of the Commission. Nine additional members will be appointed from outside the Commission who should have a prominent role in Italian and Italian American issues in higher education. Some of these nine might possibly be academics in the area of Italian Studies who do not live or teach in New Jersey, provided they would be willing to participate actively on the Committee and in the Institute’s programs. Rutgers University, the host institution, will nominate three of these nine other members. In addition to the 15, there would be 4 ex officio members: the Commission’s Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Chairperson of the Curriculum Development Committee and the Executive Director
“The Board of Academic Advisors seeks to ensure the academic standards and integrity of the New Jersey Institute of Italian and Italian American Heritage Studies and the Commission’s educational programs. The Board offers suggestions and assists in furthering the educational and cultural mission of the Institute and of the Commission. The Board also serves as an intermediary body and sounding board for relations between the Institute and the educational institutions (including the host university) with which the Institute has dealings.”
